f) Psychoanalys of Surrealist René Magritte. This is done.
g) Short biografy about Martin Achtnich (15/12). Will be published as soon as possible.

Before finishing this Update I would like to express my gratitude to all the correspondents who during this year encouraged me, gave valuable advice or sent me articles. Those who have done so, in the name of all our readers: THANK YOU SO MUCH!

There is however a special event for which I would especially like to express my appreciation and gratitude: the warm welcome and the distinction I got in July at the Szondi Institute. Especially the kind Laudation speech by Dr. Friedjung J?ttner, in which he called me the St. Paul of the Szondi movement made me feel proud and became a source of new inspiration. Indeed, although I originally had planned to stop working anymore with the Forum, after this encouragement I changed my mind and - as you can see in my Newsletter and Update - continued again after my return from Thailand with "full speed" my contributions to the Forum.

From Falkenberg in Sweden and from Odessa in Ukraine we send you our Szondi Greetings and our best wishes for a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Your editor and Slavick and Oksana, who assisted me.

COMMENTS I.:

In the first place I have the pleasure to let you know that Jean Mélon gave me permission to add and publish two more Cahiers: Nr. 8 and Nr. 9. The articles of each of these Cahiers get their own place on the Forum, you will find them in the SECTION: CAHIERS.

In this connection I want to remind you of the fact that in many underdeveloped countries highly trained professionals earn not much more that about 70 – 80 dollars a month!.

For them Jean Mélon’s permission is “ invaluable “ in many ways. Those professionals get by this a chance to read articles about the latest developments in Szondi research on the internet.

I am therefore convinced that I speak in the name of all our readers when I thank Jean Mélon for his generosity.

CHÈR JEAN, “UN GRAND MERCI” DE NOUS TOUS ! We all wish you Good health and still a long time that you may contribute with your studies to the Szondi research”.

However as for these Cahiers: I want at the same time point out that you can read them in an easier and more comfortable way by ordering them, against payment, from the following address:

Dr Jean Mélon, 20 rue Petit Bioleux, B-4122 Plainevaux.

E-Mail > melonjan@skynet.be>

Postage between 5 Euros (for one) or ( 7 Euros for three) in Europe.

Some of you will also be interested – if you understand French – to get in the details about Mélon’s “Szondi-Rorschach course” This is an exceptional opportunity to learn the practical u se of those tests. You can already order corresponding 2001 seminar notes (100 pages) at the price of only 5 euros, plus postage. Contact:

Stéphanie HAXHE, Université de Liège, Sart Tilman, B33, 1 er étage.

Moreover there will be a CD for sale that includes all the anterior published texts. The sale of this CD start from the 30th January.

For you who want to know more Prof. Helge Malmgren offers information and a (classical) Rorschach teaching program in English on the Internet.

For information take: http://www.phil.gu.se/fu/ro.html

As for the review by Madeleine Sitterding of of Richard A. Hughes book: “Cain’s Lament. A Christian Moral Psychology”: My former interest in Szondi was mainly concentrated on the Szondi test and the clinical aspects of his theory. However the influence of the Buddhist culture made me more open for the philosophical-religious aspects of Szondi’s theory. For those of you who are likewise interested in these aspects I refer to the works of Prof. Richard Hughes. That is the reason why I took up this review.

Besides this Newsletter I will put on the Forum, each one in its own section:

a) The main articles of “Cahier 8 and 9”. Section: Cahiers.

b) An article called “Systematization”, an update of Alberto Peralta about aspects of Rorschach theory. (7 pages). Section Rorschach.

c) An article called “Who was Szondi – What is Fate analysis” (7 pages) Section articles.

d) My professional autobiography: “Sailing against the wind”. (will be published around 15/12)

e) A new section TRIBUTE where the Tribute to Prof. Jaques Schotte (in French and English) and the “Laudatio” speech to your editor Leo Berlips (in German and English)

d) Psychoanalys of Surrealist RenéMagritte (15/12)

e) Short biografy about Martin Achtnich (15/12)

COMMENTS II: Refers to the items that will be put in separately.

x) Alberta’s Peraltas article, “SYSTEMATIZATION”, refers also to the Zulliger test (Z-test), an abbreviated Rorschach-test. Early in the sixties I introduced the Zulliger test in Sweden. It became my passport to start working as a consult in a big Company for applied psychology.

y) The article “Who was Szondi – What is Fateanalysis”, (7 pages) is an extract from Prof. Richard Hughes book “The return of the ancestor”. In this book he describes clearly the first phase of Szondi’s teaching, that which I call “The Old testament”. I am very much aware that this book presents the classical and orthodox exposition of Szondi’s theory and is based on Szondi’s gene theory. However as this was the ground work on which later Prof. Schotte and his collaborators developed their important contributions (Pathoanalyse) I did not hesitate to use these pages as the first step on the way to understand the development of Szondi research. For more information see: “Fundamental concepts of Fateanalysis” on the Forum, Section: Articles.

“The return of the ancestor” was originally published by Peter Lang but has gone out of print. However you can order the book at the Szondi Institute in Zürich that has some exemplars left (price 10 USA dollars). Adress: Stiftung Szondi-Institut ï Krähbühlstrasse 30 ï CH - 8044 Zürich. Tel.xx 41 -1/ 252 46 55 ï Fax xx41 -1/ 25 2 91 88. PC 80-24151-8
e-mail adress: szondi@bluewin.ch. For those of you who live in countries where your currency has been broken down I plan to put all the contents of “Return of the Ancestor” on the Szondi Forum in such a way you can download its contents.

If you who wish to get more information about the further development of Szondi’s theory I refer to the contributions of Prof. Schotte and the “Louvain School” for information see: http://home.tiscali.be/yuc-roma/index.htm.

You can load down art icles about their work from the section “NEW DEVELOPMENTS” on the >www.szondiforum.com<.( I suggest you start with Mélon’s article “Revision”). If you have questions about Pathoanalyse contact: Dr. Bob Maebe: > yuc-roma@tiscali.be

Before finishing I remind you that your Szondi registrations can be worked out and interpreted by way of a data program. One such a program is based on the classical Szondi interpretation method and has been developed by Michael Vigdorchick and Slavick Shibayev. Originally it was in Russian but there exist an English and French text version. More information: http://consul.com.ua/indexe.php3

An other program, that uses the pathoanalytical interpretation method has been developed by Bob Maebe:

Dr. Robert Maebe, Schakelveldstraat 5, B 3211 Binkom, Belgium.

Part 3a English articles.

This English part includes: 1. Report. 2. ACMélon’s “Tribute” and 3. Review)

Report about the 16th Congress of the International Company Szondi (SJS) Zurich, March 30 April 1 2002. by Esther Clenton-Meier. ( Translation LB ).

Above all, I have to thank – also in the name of the participants - all those of you who made it possible that we could organize this congress.

As for any international congress, one of the essential goals of this type of meeting was to gather, doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists who all have connections with the psychology of the destiny, where ever dispersed they might be and however they might work, alone, two or in groups with the same interest..

This congress gave give them a possibility to meet different generations, so that the younger and older participants could exchange their ideas and experiences, and to present and discuss the current theoretical developments. The Paulus academy in Zürich proved to be the right meeting place and perfectly adapted to the dimensions of this congress.

The Congress’s title " Man and Destiny " was intentionally left open and it is under this title that on Eastern Saturday until Eastern Monday 20 conferences, and two workshop were presented. The authors came from the USA, Brazil, Romania, France, Hungary, Finland, Belgium, and Poland and Switzerland.

The visit of the Szondi Institute, as well as that of Szondi’s tomb in the cemetery Fluntem, constituted an important event on this Easter Sunday. Another memorable event found its epilogue at the time of the banquet in the Paulus Academy. Several congress members benefited from this evening to transmit the greetings coming from their countries of origin and to express their recognition. One was specially addressed to Professor Jacques Schotte, whose official Tribute took place at the end of the congress on Easter Monday.

What kind of experience was possible, in addition to the widening of knowledge during the conferences? In a conversation with a colleague we learned that, in order to learn more about Fate analysis, he had not backed before the prospect to make a voyage from Moldavia to Vladivostok, at the other end of an immense country. Moreover we learned that this colleague had devoted 10 years of his life to translate the Experimentelle Triebpathologie.into Russian It was with a great emotion that the author discovered his book in the library of the Szondi Institute.

It was in a radiant and spring time that the Szondi Institute presented itself to its hosts, inside a circle of old trees and lawns strewn with yellow flowers. The decorative Szondi museum was intensely visited and photographed. The whole of the heritage that was, well ordered and catalogued, sheltered in the basement, was highly appreciated and its value as an important source of future scientific work recognized.

This place has been the witness of intense conversations, exchanges of memories and personal meetings with Szondi.

Are we quite conscious of what the voyage, the activity of the lecturers and the visits to the Szondi Institute represented for the participants, in particular for our colleagues and fellow-members who come from Russia and Eastern Europe? In any case, we learned that some of them with great enthusiasm were translating Szondi’s teachings in their own language, and that others felt strongly committed to develop and diffuse the same teachings.

The history of the psychology of destiny as well of its representatives grew richer by a new chapter during the time of this meeting. The 16 th . international Congress was completed by an outstanding event on Eastern Monday. A ceremony was held during which the work of Professor Jacques Schotte was rewarded by the presentation to him of the Szondi Price. In a very personal and moving speech Professor Jean Melon paid his tribute and honored him as his Master and friend. The meeting of Professor Schotte with Leopold Szondi is a masterly example of the potential and profitable development which can result from such a dialogue between great thinkers. In the same ways also will in the future such authentic meetings promote the further development of the work of Szondi and Schotte.

Again and again linguistic difficulties frustrated one or the other of the participants at the Congress. A Rumanian fellow-member confided ”When only the speech of Professor Schotte could be made in French! " His prayer was not heard and our fellow-member sat there, in silence, listening to a speech which hardly understood, but of which he has without doubt seized the major direction!

It remains thus much work to be done, in particular with regard to the translations, in order to be able to make possible the development and knowledge of the psychology of destiny and its accessibility to everyone.

Tribute to Prof. Jacques Schotte

(Our contribution to Mélon’s Tribute will be to place the picture of Prof. Jacques Schotte, next to Szondi, on the Front page of the Szondi Forum. Your editor)

Jean Mélon.

For all Szondi scholars who speak French and for some others too, it is certain that today the test and Szondi’s drive theory would be forgotten if Szondi and Schotte had not met at the beginning of the sixties and if Schotte had not right from the start and for ever, located the

" Triebschema " in the center of his theoretical reflections.

It was again Schotte who contributed to the international recognition of Szondi. It is thanks to him and only him that Szondi received the Doctor Honoris Causa of the Catholic University of Leuven in 1969, that of the University of Paris in 1978 and the invitation to the decade of Cerisy in 1977.

Before mentioning what Schotte found with Szondi, it is necessary to mention the reciprocal: Szondi found in Schotte initially an attentive reader, a well informed critic but also and above all, which the master accepted with less good grace, a relentless contradictor. In short, a true interlocutor.

Szondi’s genetic postulates and the primacy he grants to heredity have done the greatest damage to his work, the more so as his first book, ´”Fateanalysis” (Schicksalsanalyse) saw the day in 1944, followed closely by the lau nching of his test in l947. Heredity was then used in the service of genocide as one of the dominant features of the Nazi ideology. God however knows that Szondi, who suffered from it hard, did not have anything in common with these gangsters.

If Schotte rejects the genetic postulate, it is because it is far too convenient, precipitately enclosing the fundamental debate: If Szondi can speak about the "Drivesystem” (Triebsystem), in what does he find his is authorization? What is it that makes “system” i n his diagram? ´

”The question that I posed since always to Szondi is this one: what is the internal logic of the diagram? Szondi never doubted its relevance nor the way in which it adds up to psychiatric experience, while never daring either, this is his skeptic side, to assume explicitly its consequences” (Schotte, 1981).

Schotte always had a particular predilection for the expression: » faire un sort à », ( to transform on a higher verbal level, to conjure that he often applied in the happiest way. All those who had the chance of being present at his teachings know to what I refer. Thus he subjected to the dyads, triads and tetrads he daily frequented, Freud at the head, such an

"A ufhebung " (transformation. LB) so radical that it, for us who assisted at the operation, very often became definitive. One can be exegete without ceasing being pro--phet, in the meaning of etymology that of the person who promotes the word of Another. The day when we have to draw up the inventory of our intellectual and spiritual debt, it will be enough to start by making the list of the formulations that Schotte will have made famous by « faisant un sort » (transforming) them.

The answer to the question of knowing what Schotte found at Szondi, is for the initiates well-known from now on.

He found there the diagram which put in sequences and formats and articulated the

" categories ", worthy to be retained like the elements from where originated " all the possible destinies of man as a human person". With Szondi’s drive diagram the way is open for the development of a theoretical psychiatry which would be finally authentic, i.c. "auto-logic ". A new discipline is born, that Schotte named " Pathoanalyse ", in reference to the famous metaphor of the crystal produced by Freud in the " New conferences of introduction to psychoanalyse”

But isn't a diagram, a system which, especially when one makes some inventive changes, the symptom of the “ wizard ” who succumbed to the temptation of having absolute knowledge, so contrary to the spirit of psychoanalysis? Here is not the place to start an epistemological debate, although certainly crucial. It is enough to say that the structural prospect, far from being opposed to the analytical point of view, is that which justifies and gives it a base, and by this protects it against the danger to sink in the “ rhapsodic”, that is nothing more than a form of subjectivism. There are good diagrams which help the analysis, and bad ones which block it.

It is while he makes it undergo a “structural” cure” that Schotte starts his dialogue with Schicksalsanalyse., The " Note to introduce the structural point of view of Schicksalsanalyse " offered to Szondi for his seventieth anniversary (1963) was to be published the following year in " Szondiana V ".

This " Notice ", witness of the debt contracted by Schotte in regard to him he always will recognize as his “master”", constitutes an effort without precedent to hoist Szondi to the place he deserves.

”The greatest of the ignored, and the most ignored of the great post-freudien" psychoanalysts” (1969). Schotte shows how Szondi, who was conceptualizing at the same time in terms of dyads, triads and of tetrads, deserves to appear in the line of a tradition which, dating from the origins from our thought, initially Greek and finally German, continuous to appear among the greatest thinkers of our time.

By way of the Triebsystem (Drivesystem) Szondi made, wrote Schotte, " the account of the structuring factors of all the possible destinies of man as a human being”: he gave us the complete "catalogue" of these "factors" and especially, he was not afraid to proclaim the definitive close of it. The drive system would thus not have stolen its name.

During the years which followed the publication of the " Note ", Schotte and his pupils were occupied to show that the Szondi systematic could be compared useful with others, in particular with Lacan’s systematic and the diagrams of structural linguistic.

One can find a outline of this research in the special number, devoted to Leopold Szondi, in the " Review of psychology and educational Science ", 1971, volume 6, number 4, Editions Nauwelaerts, Leuwen.

In the fifth conference of the " International Society of research in psychology of the destiny " (Leuwen, 1969), Schotte said this:

” From the point of view of psychoanalytical history, the works of Szondi can be placed at the same time - structural - as that of Jacques Lacan. Behind the permanent differences of accent between these two authors, the other aspect of their bringing together is found in their promotion of the problem of the Ego.... Once again, from Lacan to Szondi, one observes a connection in which it often will be necessary to translate especially the second through the concepts of the first...

The real genius of Szondi is shown by his “ordonnance par totalisation” But the project of Schicksalsanalyse is not exhausted by only the serialization of the vectors of its fundamental diagram. Even in the Centre of those, it is the same capacity of ordering and internal articulation by which Szondi was to give proof by the distribution of his drive " needs ".

At this level of the things only dialectics where take place, it is a serie of psychoanalytical processes which come to take over the psychiatric categories (...) We really hardly have started to seize in its depth all the problematic of Szondi’s theory. It is especially the works of Lacan on one hand and of the phenomenologists and Daseinsanalysts on the other hand, which in addition make progress possible of these problems placed on a Freudian base. Szondi’s work, in return, clears considerably those of the authors quoted and with them the whole field opened by the analysis in the contemporary world” (Schotte, 1969).

In 1972, Zurich, at the occasion of the sixth conference; Schotte introduced another idea which was to prove to be fertile. There he said that there is an elective affinity between the Szondi’s four drive vectors and Freud’s four drive determinants :

Aim, Objet, Pressure and Source. As seen from our present perspective it appears that the accent thus has moved away from the " System " towards the " Trieb ". If the concept of the system initially was in the center of Schotte’s preoccupations, it is now the drive that comes in front, parallel with the promotion of the question of the therapeutic process.

The drive determinants can be regarded also as " moments " of the " actualization " of an unspecified drive disposition, moments which are only artificially decomposable insofar as they are ove rlapping in a global process always virtually on the way to be achieved in act. Thus one can say that the source is always already in activity waiting for the releaser which is the object; then occurs the poussée, subjective moment par excellence which corresponds to the sudden appearance of the affect and which claims in a more or less urgent way a discharge, i.e. a satisfaction, in what resides the goal of the impulse.

This dynamization, always increased by the elements of the system, is already present in the triadic reading inspired by Deese who returned to the trilogy, (C ), (S+P), origin (Sch), that had to succeed as the theory of the " Drive circuits ".

The representation of the circuit has been presented for the first time by Schotte in 1975, in the following terms:

C1 > S2 > P3 > Sch4

" Thus in each vector a factor exists of which the internal dialectics is meditated by the other. This factor comprises the most primitive reaction and the most elaborate: the passage from the one to the other is made by the other one which is thus used as mediator. Thus emerges a homology between the four “mediator” factors " (d, s, hy, k) and the four others (m, h, e, p). By bringing them in closer connection with the dialectics of work and love, by which Freud defines health, one can pose that the “mediator” factors " represent in each vector the factor of the type work; the others constitute the factor of the type love .... In addition, in the interior of each vector is found a homologous movement to that in which since a long time the diagram is read: the Triadic reading:

(I = C; IIa = S, IIb = P; III = Sch) which postulates an increasing complexity from C to Sch, while passing by S and P, since the same formal mediation movement of the passage from the first to the third level is observed by the detour of a two- part register, now within each vector.

These developments lead in the final analysis to the re-inscri ption of the diagram in a unit which one can be ´made to understand by using the form of the Mendelejev table.

There each horizontal line represents a series of increasing complexity and each vertical line sets up a group where you will find elements which have between them certain reports of structure. “Thus emerge reports of complexity which impose that the Szondi diagram is hold together by laws of structure and does not result from a fortuitous reunion of various

elements ". The circuit theory made it possible to cross a decisive step in the comprehension of the internal logic of the system.

Preparing the way, I put forth in 1978 the assumption of a structural homology between the four Szondi vectors and something that Freud had made a part of his system and which precisely evokes the Kantian concept of " Kategorie ", to know the serie of the

" Primal fantasies " (Urphantasien). Their connection is carried out, so to speak, by itself:

C = return to the centre, S = seduction, P = primitive scene, Sch = castration. Placing these two conepts parallel was the occasion of a new wave of theoretical and clinical developments. The primal fantasies, as Laplanche and Pontalis already had said in their memorable article published in” Modern Times “ (1964, n°2 IS), seemed to be the mediators of the transformation of what we in practice were used to call as well the “ drive positions ” as much as “personal positions ".

The " primal fantasies ", as much as they are as Freud says explicitly, the equivalent not of the drives but of the instinct, become extinct in the human animal, offer to the szondians the occasion of an epistemological correct alternative, to " genes " since they represent " the phylogenetic heritage of our species ". To refer to the primal fantasies, it is to evoke a reality of which any psychoanalyst each day hears the echo in the statement of his patient. To call upon genes, on the other hand, it is to use a referent which is not identifiable like such, it is an abstraction without locatable substrate. However, it goes without saying that the

" primal fantasies " are rooted in genes but we cannot say which. Let us say frankly:

the pious fidelity to refer to drives gene theory is an epistemological error which locks up the Szondi theory in a fatal dogmatism.

The question of the " personalization” " has caused a new reflexion, close to the inaugural Szondi question concerning human destiny. It concerns about what it is necessary to understand by this concept of personal position; the person, unlike the ego and the couple ego-object not being until present a psychoanalytical concept. It can become it, and lead to another fertile revision of the Ego concept, under condition of returning from there and keep to, so to say, the grammatical of I. the person: : II (Es - 1), II, elle (Er, Sie - 2), You (Du- 3 ), Me (Ich - 4).

The articles " Personal positions and drive positions " (1981) and " Primal fantasies, psychiatric nosography and personal positions " (1984) show at which point this question is significant for the development of a psychiatric nosography which would take off finally from the descriptive point of view where it is confined since a long time, and more than ever in the current DSM4 wh ich signs the globalization of only one idée, which means the total absence of thought in modern psychiatry.

Animated with a savage energy, the preoccupation with a reasonable and properly human nosography can be seen through all the work of Schotte, with the constant project to found an authentic " anthropopsychiatrie ". If the conjunctive opposition between neurosis and perversion has been definitively pointed out by Freud in the well-known formula: " The neurosis is so to speak the negative of a perversion ", however it is not valid in the same way for the psychoses and the disorders of the mood. The articulation with the axis neurosis-perversion remained to be made. This has implicitly been done, in Szondi’s diagram. This made it possible for Schotte to transform (another time) Hans Binder’s aphorism: " The psychopathes are thymopathes ", and to double the Freudian formula by this other, as suggestive as elucidating: " Psychosis is so to speak the positive of psychopathy ".

Psychoanalyst, psychiatrist and professor of clinic psychology, to quote only his official titles, Jacques Schotte never put up with the, in reality ideological, dichotomies which feed indefinitely the divorce between these disciplines, starting with the suspect concept of etiology, and the schism even in between themselves right in their centre. Once more, Schotte finds at Szondi the " Pontifex oppositorum " which, far from an insipid ecumenism, makes it possible to counter the contemporary theoretical splitting up and indefatigably to start again an interdisciplinary confrontation which would not turn immediately in a dialogue of the deaf.

When one makes the history of the ’ » École de Louvain”  it will also be necessary to draw up the list of all the friendships that Schotte will have precipitated between a crowd of people who, without his intervention, would never have met nor even known each other.

When I remember the fate Freud got when he evoked, the complementary opposition in the “ the dynamics of the Transfer” " between the " demonic " and the " " tychic ", I would readily say that the " demon " of Schotte merges with an immense appetite of " tuchè ".

Nobody else than he practices the art of encounter. He never ceased to provoke encounters, ob-ligeant them to become dia-logues, characterized by being most unforeseen, most fertile, most fateful and definitive, those which are open to be invited to.

If it is a moral quality that all recognize in him, it is his formidable generosity.

Man of the word, intellectual in progress, properly peripatetic, blacksmith of the concept, extraordinary orator, disdainful of the " initially written ", impenitent traveler like the presocratiques were, (of which he kept the sandals), he invites us to leave the dogmatic sleeps.

Schotte often has repeated: "what I did, are only traces on sand". The century that started seems to give reason to this pessimism. But we who were nourished by his word, we don’t believe this at all. He who has no other concern than the truth cannot be mistaken.

Like the French poet André Salmon wrote: " Truth is always new ".

Das Wahre ist immer neu.

REVIEUW by Madeleine Sitterding

Richard A. Hughes, “Cain's Lament. A Christian Moral Psychology.

217 sides, Peter long Publishing Inc.. NewYork 2001,

The book is — as the author point out in the beginning –based on his activity as a professor in theology, in ethics and about existential questions. It is meant as contribution to a Christian moral psychology. The work is arranged into 3 parts, containing essays about moral psychology, family dramas and theology.

The norm for history and tradition of the western world is the Bible and particularly the hebraic, thus the Old Testament. Starting point and central motive form the history of Cain and Abel, which Hughes examines under the aspect of the Biblical " Lament " (lamenta/lamentatio), where it contains both the against God complaint as the accusation: Complaint about one’s own suffering, guilt, punishment; accusation because of unfairness. From the psychological criterion seen it is the history of the son, who loves the father, and hates the brother — as his Rival, because he must part his father’s love with him. The emotions resulting of this the author calls the Cain complex.

Moral emotions — the only expression of ethical Imperative — form the motivations for the acknowledgment of laws of society and social justice. Existential problems are based on personal choice of destiny, anxiety, illness, death. As a most prominent representative of this existential thematic the author selected Dostojevskij, his family history and figures and relations in from " the Karamazov brothers ".

In the introduction to the moral psychology he refers to the necessity for the belief in the enemy, who is responsible for the evil in the world, however at the same time also is the pivot of historical progress.

Evil rises from the search for Goodness; Evil is the enemy to destroy, to defeat, with has the consequence: " I must hurt you, in order to repair what you did to me. Consequently aggression justifies itself against the enemy, because it is an opponent to Goodness. Enemy pictures in the history of the western civilization are based on specific historical war episodes from the Hebrew Bible (the A.T.) War is sanctified because it means to fight against Evil and therefore represents Holiness. Here lies also the ground for the distinction between killing and murdering. To kill in war and the warrior who kills are sanctioned and therefore he is acquitted by society. The creation of specific enemy pictures motivates the warrior. To illustrate this Hughes refers to observations from the 2.Worldwar (J. Glenn Gray: The Warriors). More examples from earlier and recent history could easily be found. The most difficult to handle the war situation has, without a doubt, he who still sees the enemy like himse lf as a human and of equivalent nature.´

The questioning of Vietnam veterans supplied interesting aspects to the problem of the picture of the enemy: the Vietnamese enemy was designated as a "gook", an American slang word, which means as much as dirt, soot, mud etc.. Also non--Americans, with a dark skin, foreigners from the Pacific islands, from Asia, Africa or any European country, except those from England are designated in such a way on certain level.

Dehumanization makes it easier to kill the e nemy, it even can become a pseudo-cleaning- ritual, which is connected with pleasure/desire. From the dark and honourless and much criticized Vietnam War is in this way, since the ´1980 born a new paramilitaristic culture that is active outside sanctioned police and xxx military units. ´

If the Cain complex can be processed, i.e. succeeds one to work through the grief over the (alleged) dear loss of the father and to internalize paternal love and in such a way to develop a genuine sense for brotherhood, then this leads to the sense of responsibility, it constitutes a conscience. If the Cain complex remains unresolved, the negative sides appears, the Omnipotence of the desires, the non-acceptance of the brother as an equivalent partner turns Brotherhood into becoming a “Gang”. Eruptive attacks of accumulated primitive emotions such as rage, anger, envy, jealousy, hate, revenge are consequences of the not solved complex; Hughes so called “Cain-emotions”, can suddenly and spontaneously break out primarily as a consequence of a trauma or a threat. The Cain complex and its moral emotions activate the paroxysmal aspect of human nature. He is suddenly facing changes of affects respectively personality reversals, so that self-control shows itself to be only mask . The Cain complex can in extreme situations lead to forms of murder which can not be connected to specific causes. These can be understood to belong to the “epileptic murderer syndrome”, here described as Cain event.´

One section is dedicated to the development of Cainitistic personality course in the childhood, whereby Hughes uses H.J.Ringger's work in described in Szondiana 6/2 (1986) and 14/1(1994). Here the author discusses the hidden background of the paroxysmal personality (in Szondi terminology called “Hinterganger”) that supplements the conscious Ego and although it is based to a large extent on biological and hereditary factors , nevertheless active participates in decision making.

In a chapter concerning geotropic aspects of marriage and choice of occupation (professions) he refers to Szondis concept about the relationship of Genotropism and Heterosis and points out to the specific genetic research. Szondis theory about occupations and occupational choice of Epileptics and their relatives was examined by Japanese psychiatrists and confirmed to a large extent. For the family genetic inheritance (Family drama) the author refers - as mentioned – to Dostoyevsky’s life and work.

The essays in theology are concerned with interpretations and the chance of meanings of " Lament " in the Old as well as the New Testament. In the process of the centuries Cain became from a complex, uniting both bad and good aspects Cain, more the quality shape of being evil. "The greatest part of world history is represented by the forever returning Cain” “ (Szondi: Kain Gestalten des Bosen).

Especially in this connection actually is surprising that the author so little refers to Szondi’s work about Cain - his book - Moses answer to Cain ". Finally one finds in both books fundamental aspects and answers to Cain as the law breaker and his change from “ a massive Cain into Moses, the legislator. In the “Essays about the psychology of moral and Family drama”

Hughes uses much space to present Szondis work about the theory of drives and Genotropismus ".

In my opinion the book is very inspiring, especially as regarding the theological interpretations of the figure of Cain and their effects in newer history. As a lack I feel that the bibliographic references are taken up at the end of each separate chapter instead of being summarized as a bibliography." Madeleine Sitterding

Extract of a letter: “This is a major work in which I draw upon Szondi's ideas and develop some of my own. I have a chapter on genetics, in which I try to update his theory of genotropism. I believe that continues to be a fundamental concept and worthy of exploration. I develop the idea of the Cain personality and have a chapter on the "Childhood Cain," in which I draw upon Dr. Ringger's work. I am impressed with his work, and I read his essays very carefully.”

HOMMAGE A JACQUES SCHOTTE

Jean Melon.

But, Objet, Poussée et Source.

PROGRAM SZONDI AND RORSCHACH COURSE

IN GERMAN (Report and Review)

Kurzer Ruckblick auf den 16. Kongress der internationalen Szondi-Gesellschaft SIS/OS/IS)Zurich 30. Man — 1. April 2002

REZENSION by Madeleine Sitterding

“Richard A. Hughes, Cain’s Lament”. A Christian Moral Psychology. 217 Seiten, Peter Lang Publishing. Inc. NewYork 2001, Studies in Biblical Literature vol. 35.
